Amoeba@Ilovani Art Exhibition

As part of the Plett Arts Festival Amoeba@Ilovani took part hosting an art exhibition, turning the furniture/decor shop to gallery space almost overnight. Showcasing a group exhibition of female South African artists and designers based in the garden route, except for one Cape Town artist.

Participating at the second exhibition hosted at the Ilovani showroom is:-

Kali van der Merwe, Daya Heller, Madelein Marincowitz and Rosemary Murray joined by residential artists Claire Regnard and Brigitte Laurent.

The unique exhibition space is befitting for the work displayed where the general theme represents that of a natural element. The Ilovani showroom is located and surrounded by forests, where the large pine trees almost dwarf the showroom.

The opening night saw plenty of support from the art community and locals of Plettenberg bay. You couldn’t drive down the freeway without spotting the fire places illuminating the tall trees, creating a warm and inviting feel.  A very different atmosphere to your usual art events in towns. It became a social event whereby giving one a chance to linger longer and talk with the artists on a much more relaxed level.

The work on display is varied in terms of different mediums used, ranging from sculptures, paintings, ceramics and photography yet there is a connection between the pieces.

The theme of flight in Madeleins Marincowitz paintings of a series of birds are opposing to Kali van der Merwe’s images of dead and decaying insects that are portrayed as if they are still in flight.

The use of hardy materials like resin and pvc, have been transformed with the inspiration of fynbos by Daya Heller and Brigitte Laurent into “fragile” and detailed objects.

This exhibition was curated by Claire Regnard.
