Bellevue Market

I’ve been in Cape Town a year now, and what a year its been. Filled with plenty adventure, new challenges, learning how to get around in a new city. Being a quiet Durban girl it’s been a huge adjustment from the quiet and calm of Kloof, where this wonderfully quaint artisan market comes to life at night.

Among the green hills, the big trees and the peacefulness this hidden gem of a market is tucked away in Kloofs Bellevue campus. Situated on top of fields hill, where people below the hill rarely venture to.

The twilight market breathes life into Kloof on a Friday night under the trees decorated in fairy lights. The market focuses on promoting local artisans, with some of the best food and craft vendors on display from the upper highway area. Once the sun goes down the frogs start to croak attracting the little ones, the fairy lights create a magical atmosphere. Who would want to be anywhere else after a week at work…When the rain is paying nice that is.

Its a place for young and old to enjoy, on a blanket with some wine or browsing the stalls while listening to live music. Every week the live music changes adding that extra charm, the crafts and artisans do change around so if there is something that catches your eye then don’t hesitate. I find this adds to the market as you can always find something different, which keeps it interesting as theres always something new to find.

bellevue three-streams

My top 3 favourites are the amazing brownies that nobody should go home without, the freshest artisanal flatbreads by Loophole which is a healthy dinner option that can be shared (they’ve just done a revamp, go try one) The craftmanship that goes into the wood turned lamps by Dale Reece of Three streams is astounding, I love his work.

This market is abuzz with energy, its intimate without being overcrowded. I have been on the hunt for a market to rival this one here on the west coast… I havent succeeded yet, but am still hopefull and on the lookout if anyone has any suggestion for me to check out.

Take your friends and family and go enjoy some dinner under the stars with a glass of wine or 2.

The market used to happen on the last Friday of the month, this year they are changing things up. It will only be happening every 3 months with a cover charge of R20 for ages over 18.

The dates for the next markets are 31 March, 30 June and 29 September 2017
